The Seiko Prospex Glacier Save the Ocean SPB301J1 is a new iteration of a model that was made famous by Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now and has come to bear the name 'Captain Willard', after the character played by this phenomenal actor.
The SPB301J1 has a very comfortable wrist presence with its 42.7mm diameter, while also having a very reasonable 13.2mm thickness and 46.4mm lug to lug distance. This ensures it will also fit a smaller wrist than you'd expect, especially with the clever crown placement at 4 o'clock. Both the case and bracelet have a super hard coating to help prevent scratches.
Under the hood is the in-house Seiko Cal. 6R35 movement. This sturdy workhorse features an impressive 70 hour power reserve. Of course the watch is also very capable of dealing with water, due to the 200m water resistance.
This model is part of the 'Save The Ocean' line, of which Seiko makes several designs, in collaboration with Fabien Cousteau, the grandson of the legendary ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau. A portion of the sales from these timepieces are donated to ocean conservation efforts.
But when we write so much about the specifications, we don't do justice to the stunning dial. That is the true highlight of this amazing watch and a truly highlights one of Seiko's biggest skills: making phenomenal dials. While usually you have to choose between substance and a pretty face, the SPB301J1 has it all!
